Requirements to become a teacher refer to the educational components needed to become certified. Qualities needed to become a teacher are different. Anyone can take the courses, get the grades, and receive the necessary certifications. But the qualities are more of a personal nature. Knowledge is one important aspect of teaching, presentation is another, but there are personal qualities that are needed, too. These important teacher qualities determine the difference between an average teacher and an effective teacher. How many do you possess?
Successful Teacher Qualities
- Communicates effectively with students, staff, parents, community
- Knowing when to stop and listen to your students, parents, and colleagues, is very important. Not only are teachers givers of knowledge, they often are representatives of their educational community, negotiators, and diplomats. Teaching is about encouraging questions and responding in a respectful manner. Communication is a quality of teaching necessary to presenting your lesson or message in a clear, organized, and concise way with patience to inspire trust and confidence through not only words, but actions too.
- Motivates students to enjoy learning and achieve goals
- This successful teaching quality instills a love for lifelong learning by exhibiting enthusiasm and presentation of material in interesting and relevant context. Outstanding teachers allow the students many opportunities to see the same material so that the students can learn according to their own learning style.
- Understands students’ needs, both educational and emotional
- Students’ may have concerns or issues going on in or outside of school which may affect learning outcome. The best qualified teachers are attuned to their students’ needs and present themselves as an adult that can be trusted. Teaching isn’t always just about the curriculum.
- Promotes individuality and creativity
- This teacher quality is one of the most important. If educators stifle their students’ need for self-expression, then they will hinder their growth and self-reliance. By presenting lessons in creative ways that take into account the varied learning styles, teachers can show by example how to use these qualities.
- Exhibits positive character and citizenship for students to emulated
- Teachers need to allow students to see themselves as positive role models who also make mistakes, use critical thinking skills to solve problems, and have a sense of humor making light of their own imperfections.
- Receptive to new ideas, criticisms, rules, and mandates
- Educational initiatives change in cycles based on the current trend in educational research. Effective teachers are open-minded and willing to implement new theories in education, yet able to know when and how to adapt the curriculum to what best suits the students. This important master teacher quality shows students when working as a team member one must be cooperative, receptive to change, follow rules, and still maintain beliefs and individuality.
As you can see, the best teachers hold personal qualities that are a natural part of their character. These teacher qualities are exhibited through actions and passed on to their students giving them the background to grow into adults with good character.
