The top 10 teaching professions are those that are most popular, most in demand and/or highest paying. Whatever teaching profession you choose, you’ll find that a teaching degree will always enable you to find a faculty opening in a high demand area. People who hold education degrees will always have jobs available for them in our society. But the following top 10 teaching professions are currently providing some of the best opportunities around:

Spanish teachers

English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers

Special education teachers

Math teachers

Science teachers

Principals

Assistant principals

Superintendents

Other administrators

Overseas teachers

Bilingual teachers, including Spanish teachers and ESL teachers, are highly in demand right now as the United States continues to grow more diverse. This diverse demographic has presented some challenges, and bilingual teachers are the best equipped to meet these challenges head-on. Since Spanish speaking students make up the largest population of students whose native language is not English, Spanish speaking teachers are the most sought after today. Being bilingual simply opens up more job opportunities.

Special education teachers are some of the most sought after these days, but the job does come with some trials as well. Some school districts have started hiring candidates who are not yet certified in special education, but are currently pursuing their teaching degrees, and then paying for the classes they need for full certification. There is no doubt that math and science teachers are highly in demand as well.

Many school districts can’t find enough qualified math and science teachers because fewer education degree majors target these disciplines. But if match and science isn’t your thing, you could always get a job as an educational administrator such as a principal, assistant principal, superintendent or other administrator. These important professions are involved with hiring teachers and staff members, managing budgets, overseeing daily operations and developing new programs.

The last of the top 10 teaching professions is the international school teacher. Many schools have been created to provide an education to students in expatriate communities, which provide a great opportunity to work while seeing the world.

More and more K-12 teachers are getting certified through the teaching degree alternate route, which has greatly influenced the way that many people are entering the profession and allowed more people to begin this important career. Every state now has its own teaching degree alternate route, thanks to a program that began in the early 1980s as a means of avoiding teacher shortages. Today the program serves as a way to recruit, train and certify people who already have at least a bachelor’s degree and want to become teachers in kindergarten through 12th grade.

The teaching degree alternate route started out back in 1983 when the National Center for Education Information began surveying states about the alternatives they were offering to the traditional college preparation for prospective teachers. At that time there were only eight states that had some kind of program in place. Now there are alternative teaching preparation programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and the number of teachers completing these programs each year continues to rise.

Since the teaching degree alternate route is not a federal program, there are different routes in each state. In fact, there are approximately130 alternate routes to teacher certification throughout the country that are being implemented through a reported 485 programs. Many teachers are completing these programs each year. In the 2005/2006 academic year, for example, NCEI estimated that approximately 59,000 individuals were issued teaching certificates through alternative routes, which was an increase from approximately 50,000 in 2004/2005. Around the nation we see an average of about one third of all new teachers being hired coming from these alternate route programs.

The teaching degree alternate route programs differ from state to state and there are typically several programs to choose from in the more populated states. This has enabled many people to become teachers who might otherwise not have, and provided more opportunities for a wider base of individuals to enter the teaching profession. K-12 teaching is still a very honorable and steady job, so anything that makes it possible for more people to become teachers should be beneficial for our society.

The certification exam requirements may differ slightly from one state to the next, but the steps to prepare for the exams should be the same.

The first step towards acing the teaching certification exam is taking practice tests. There are examples and old tests that you can take, so you will feel ready on test day. The next step is to read the directions and information for the exams required to get a teaching certificate in your specific state. You don’t want to waste time trying to figure out the instructions, after all. These workshops allow future teachers to take additional practice exams and prepare for the test in groups.

Once you have finished the first three steps, then you should be ready to formulate a game plan to pace yourself correctly on the day of the exam. Just getting through all of the questions in the amount of time allotted is one of the hardest aspects of the exams. But if you pace yourself and know how much time to spend on each question then you can get through it with no problems.

The last step to prepare for the exams required to get a teaching certificate is to sign up for the exams. Then all you have to do is pass all of the exams and get certified. Just make sure to look for the test schedule and set a date ahead of time, so you know how much time you have to prepare. This will also make it easy to set a study schedule for the exact amount of time that you have to prepare before you take the actual exam.

Today if we look at the current scenario then we can easily find that there has been a considerable increase in the number of educational institutions in the United States, but in recent years the East Coast of the United States has turned out to be the major hub of education schools that has pulled many students from all across the nation. In fact, it is one of the largest industries in the United States. Making a career in teaching can actually cover a host of different positions and in turn play a vital role in satisfying a wide variety of interests. Even in the most primitive or reclusive of jungles, you have teachers and mentors in some fashion or the other powering knowledge transfer through the generations.

Here are some interesting teaching facts that are not well known to the public.

Little Known Teaching Fact #1 - Do teachers get paid during summer months? Teachers usually get paid on a yearly basis. When they are recruited, they are provided the option of their annual salary divided for 12 months or for the number of months that the school actually runs in a year. So, you may see teachers opting for the first option receiving paychecks through the year whereas those choosing the second option may receive salaries for only those months that the school actually runs.
Here are some interesting teaching facts that are not well known to the public.

Little Known Teaching Fact #1 – Do teachers get paid during summer months? Teachers usually get paid on a yearly basis. When they are recruited, they are provided the option of their annual salary divided for 12 months or for the number of months that the school actually runs in a year. So, you may see teachers opting for the first option receiving paychecks through the year whereas those choosing the second option may receive salaries for only those months that the school actually runs. The underlying thread to options 1 and 2 is they are getting paid on an annual basis including summer months but how the salary lands in their hands as a paycheck depends on the option they signed up for.

Little Known Teaching Fact #2- What is teacher tenure?
Teacher tenure is similar to a permanent contract for a teacher. It is usually applicable to college professors or sometimes, primary or secondary school teachers. To achieve it, teachers must demonstrate organizational skills, proven teaching skills, research capabilities accepted by community, publication of meaningful papers and assisted their educational institutions in extracurriculars relating to committees and policies creation. They should also put in at least 6-7 years before they even qualify for being considered for teacher tenure. Benefits of teacher tenure are job security, freedom to pursue research and interests even if they are not in line with institutional policies and opinions of authorities.

Sometimes, teacher tenure may be granted in a shorter period of 2-3 years, mostly in the case of primary and secondary schools if the instructors are very successful.

Little Known Teaching Fact #3 – What do teachers expect from students?
A recent poll conducted by National Education Association asked the teacher respondents what they would like to receive most from their students. Nearly 50% of teachers responded saying that a simple “thank you” will suffice.

Little Known Teaching Fact #4 – Where is the demand for teachers?
Some areas where teachers are sought after are in Exceptional Student Education and subjects such as Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.

Little Known Teaching Fact #5 – What is the attrition rate of teachers in the profession?
Interestingly, nearly 50% of teachers resign in the first 5 years. This is a very high attrition rate. It is explained that this is mostly because those entering the profession have not done their ground work properly and come in perhaps with unrealistic expectations which acts as a dampener. They are also not properly trained and equipped and hence, feel the only way is to exit the profession.

There are many more interesting facts about teaching. However, the above are some of the key facts that most people are usually not aware of.
